KRABAT has achieved worldwide fame.

The writer Jurij Brězan (1916-2006) placed the most famous figure from Sorbian mythology at the center of two novels. Otfried Preußler inspired the young hero with magical powers to write a later award-winning children’s book, which has been translated into 31 languages. It also served as the basis for the exciting film “KRABAT,” which hit theaters in the fall of 2008 with a star-studded cast. The film production of “KRABAT” captivated millions of viewers and drew attention to the region where the story originated.

The bilingual region of Upper Lusatia, where Germans and Sorbs live together, has been focusing more on Krabat since 2001. An association of the same name was founded here with the aim of promoting the region’s tourism and economic development.

Nowadays, you can follow in Krabat’s footsteps on a cycle path. Several products named after him have been launched, such as KRABAT Pilsner beer and a card game to mark the film’s premiere. In Kamenz, children can let off steam in a KRABAT playground.

Every year, a KRABAT festival is held at a different location in the region associated with the legend.

In Groß Särchen, KRABAT’s Neues Vorwerk was built with the support of Krabat e.V. The clubhouse of the KRABAT Dorfclub & Heimatverein Groß Särchen e.V. offers exhibitions and meeting rooms.

In 2008, the KRABAT Milchwelt (Milk World) was opened in Kotten. Here, visitors can experience agricultural cycles according to the “cow-cheese-kilowatt” principle and watch the master at work in the glass cheese dairy, as well as purchase dairy products on site, e.g., KRABAT cheese.

In 2006, construction began on the outskirts of Schwarzkollm near Hoyerswerda. There, the KRABAT mill grew into an amazing ensemble that offers many enchanting experiences. Visitors can marvel at props and scenery from the movie, including parts of the mill wall, Krabat’s spade, magic wand, and the mill staircase.
