This year, after 18 KRABAT FESTIVALS, the 5th KRABAT Week will take place. From October 3 to October 11, 2026, it will serve as a spotlight event. Its aim is to make the diversity of what the KRABAT region has to offer visible and tangible for locals as well as people from other parts of Germany, Europe, and the world.

In addition to immersing yourself in the traditional bilingual Upper Lusatia with its lively customs, there will also be plenty of culinary delights. However, it is above all our beautiful nature that nourishes the body, mind, and soul. Despite lignite mining, it has managed to reclaim areas, although the process is still ongoing. We wish you an enjoyable stay with all five senses.

The event program is updated regularly, as changes may occur at short notice.

Day of the Regions

Once a year, around the time of the harvest festival, the Day of Regions becomes visible across the country.

People all over Germany show during a multi-week action period from early September to the end of October with festivals, markets, workshops, and tours how vibrant and diverse their region is.

Whether it’s a farm, craft business, restaurant, club, or private individual – anyone who is committed to their region can take part. The goal is to make the wide-ranging commitment to a sustainable, future-proof regional economy visible and to show how important regional structures are for quality of life and community.

This year’s motto is „Providing locally – GOOD for tomorrow.“

Since 1999, the Day of Regions has been the only nationwide platform showcasing regions that are strong socially, ecologically, and economically. The project is organized by the Federal Association of the Regional Movement together with numerous local initiatives.

Anyone can join in – with their own events in agriculture, gastronomy, services, clubs, or simply as conscious consumers. In this way, the Day of Regions promotes regional cohesion, sustainable consumption, and economic value creation.

The Power of the Smoothie and the Herbs - Part 1

One seminar – two options:

At the first session, you’ll learn interesting facts about local medicinal herbs and how to combine up to seven selected plants into a healthy and tasty smoothie.

Together, you’ll prepare a „power drink“ and taste it right there. This gives you practical ideas for a healthy breakfast all year round. The offer is bilingual (Sorbian/German).

The second session takes you out into nature. On a guided herbal walk, you’ll discover valuable „raw diamonds“ for the winter.

Under the guidance of a herbal and medicinal plant educator, you’ll learn to identify wild herbs, use them wisely, and preserve them for the year.

The herbs collected together will then be processed in a way suitable for the kitchen and tasted.

Along the way, you’ll also learn fitting proverbs in both Sorbian and German.

Marija Scholze and Regina Schneider are looking forward to seeing you.

St. Michael Monastery Bakery & Café

At the St. Michael Monastery Bakery & Café, we invite you to a delightful journey through our region during KRABAT Week. Look forward to traditional specialties like potatoes with linseed oil quark, freshly baked buttermilk pancakes, and fine poppy seed pastries – lovingly prepared from ingredients that have their roots here.

The dairy products come from the KRABAT milk world, and our hearty malt bread comes straight from our own bakery. So you can taste a piece of home.

Dear citizens, dear guests,

As district administrator of the Bautzen district, it is a special honor for me to be the patron of this year’s KRABAT Week. The legend of Krabat is deeply rooted in Lusatia and has fascinated generations of people. It is impressive how KRABAT e.V. has taken up this legend and kept it alive in our region.

With great commitment, the KRABAT e.V. association shows us how important it is to preserve our regional identity. This is not just about traditions, but about the common good – about the feeling of home, cohesion, and sustainability. With KRABAT Week, the members of the association and their cooperation partners create a unique experience along the KRABAT Cycle Route, which, as a connecting element, allows our region to be experienced in a special way. This week is more than just a celebration; it is an invitation to discover and appreciate the incredible diversity of our homeland – be it linguistic, cultural, scenic, or culinary.

The KRABAT Cycle Route offers both locals and visitors the chance to experience the beauty and richness of Upper Lusatia up close. I am particularly pleased that KRABAT Week brings together stakeholders from three LEADER regions and provides a platform for developing creative ideas and new approaches for the future of our region.

With this in mind, I would like to thank everyone who has made this week possible and cordially invite you to join us in celebrating the diversity and beauty of our homeland.

Best regards,

Udo Witschas
County Administrator of the Bautzen District
