THE KRABAT E.V.

KRABAT e.V. was founded on March 19, 2001, in Hoyerswerda, district of Schwarzkollm, under the official name “Auf den Spuren des Krabat – Verein zur regionalen Entwicklung in der zweisprachigen Lausitz e.V.” (abbreviation: KRABAT e.V.).

It is the result of a participatory development process from the grassroots level. The association arose from discussions, ideas, and suggestions from citizens and organized groups in the communities to constructively accompany the necessary structural change in Lusatia. The participating communities, which provided the initial impetus for meaningful networking and common goals, were:

Nebelschütz

Groß Särchen

In the meantime, the idea of the KRABAT region has gradually developed into a viable development project for the bilingual Lusatia region between Kamenz, Bautzen, Hoyerswerda, and Lower Lusatia.

KRABAT e. V. receives Saxony Citizens' Award 2018

Completely unexpectedly, our association received the Saxon Citizens‘ Award for its voluntary work in the category “Social Commitment,” for which there were 44 nominations in this category alone.

Laudator Birgit Munz, Vice President of the Dresden Higher Regional Court and, since 2007, also President of the Constitutional Court of the Free State of Saxony, praised the association for its idea of a KRABAT region, in which the legendary figure is developed into a regional brand and creates identity. The association sees itself as a network in which municipalities, associations, companies, and individuals work together. The aim is to develop the region economically, touristically, and socially. In particular, this involves preserving rural customs and traditions as well as the Sorbian language and culture. In addition, the association’s commitment builds bridges to Croatia, the home of Johann von Schadowitz, the historically documented person behind the legendary figure of KRABAT.

Together with the Dresden Frauenkirche Foundation and the Dresdner Bank Cultural Foundation, the Free State of Saxony honors associations, initiatives, institutions, and individuals in five categories for their outstanding commitment to society, tolerance, and democracy. The wide range of civic engagement is once again reflected in the high number of 114 nominations. The keynote speech at the event in the lower church of the Dresden Frauenkirche was given by Minister President Michael Kretschmer.
