A fabulous journey
Between Bautzen (Budyšin), Kamenz (Kamjenc), and Hoyerswerda (Wojerecy), cyclists can follow in the footsteps of the Sorbian legendary figure KRABAT.
The KRABAT region (KRABATowy kraj) is located in the Bautzen-Kamenz-Hoyerswerda area. This area got its name from the stories and legends about the Sorbian Faust KRABAT, probably the most famous legendary figure in bilingual Lusatia.
He spent most of his life in the villages around Hoyerswerda. In the Black Mill near Schwarzkollm (Čorny Chołmc), he learned the magic craft from the Black Miller. In the market square in Wittichenau (Kulow), he played pranks on the rich cattle dealers. He saved the father of the Saxon Elector from the Turks and also thwarted an attempt to poison him. As a farm owner in Groß Särchen (Wulke Ždźary), he used his magical powers to make barren soil fertile, irrigate withered seeds, and drain swamps. When a white swan rose to the sky after his death, the Sorbian farmers said: “That is the escort of the great KRABAT. He will not leave us and will ensure that we become a free and happy people.”
Today, you can experience the stages of Krabat’s life and the culture of the German-Sorbian population on the KRABAT Cycle Route. The approximately 90 km long route not only caters to cultural and sporting needs, but also invites you to linger and enjoy the Upper Lusatian heath and pond landscape with its many fish ponds, beautiful fishing spots, and rare bird species.
Following in Krabat’s footsteps, cyclists can start their tour in the north of the KRABAT region in Schwarzkollm.
