International Sculpture Workshop

The Miltitz quarry is located in the southern part of the Lusatian Bedrock. Granodiorite mining began around 1900. Production at the Miltitz quarry finally came to an end on June 30, 2000. Since 2006, the municipality of Nebelschütz and KRABAT e.V. have been working on a project to transform the industrial site into an art and cultural center. Step by step, a building for the Freiberg diving club was constructed at the quarry, as well as the main building for cultural use by the municipality, with a lounge, toilet, washroom, and kitchen.

The Miltitz quarry is a cultural asset, a cultural heritage that has grown over time and must be preserved and developed further. In accordance with the wishes of the municipality of Nebelschütz, a socio-cultural center with a Germanic settlement, Slavic village, permanent sculpture workshop, diving area, and cultural stage is to be created in the Miltitz quarry in the long term. The 30-hectare site is thus to be filled with life again.

Since 2006, the municipality of Nebelschütz has hosted the annual International Sculpture Workshop in the Miltitz quarry every summer. Since then, sculptures have been created from granite, sandstone, and wood, as well as ceramics, metal, and pigments. The event took place for the 17th time in 2023, now under the auspices of Steinleicht e.V. The underwater collection project is ongoing.
